The protected forest's main tree species, Araucaria [Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze 1898], is a dominant feature found mainly in southern Brazil and the eastern and southern parts of São Paulo state. It can also be seen in small areas of Argentina and Paraguay, and is recognized by various common names, including Brazilian pine and pine-Parana; it's also known as curi, which comes from indigenous roots. Initially referred to as Columbea angustifolia Bertol. 1819, this species has been thriving since over 200 million years ago when the population first spread throughout Brazil's northeast region. The dioecious conifer, evergreen and heliophytic, can grow up to 50m tall, with a trunk diameter of 2.5 m at breast height. Its unique shape is unlike any other tree in Brazilian landscapes, resembling a bowl or umbel. Originally occupying an area of around 200 square kilometers, it's been heavily exploited for its valuable timber and nutritious seeds since the 19th century. As a result, today its territory is reduced to just a small fraction, which according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) places the Araucaria in Critically Endangered status.
