Pinball Score Camwheels
prusaprinters

Overview

The score camwheels in some vintage pins may crack or otherwise become too worn to work properly due to their age and use. While there are workarounds to correct certain types of damage nobody is offering replacement cams at the time of writing. These models aim to recreate these cams so anyone with access to a 3D printer can repair their machines.

Disclaimer While I have done my best to determine the correct dimensions from videos, pictures, and prior works (see Special thanks, I do not currently own any cams to compare against. As a result, I strongly recommend printing these models in a cheap material first to ensure they work. If you do print a model and find it isn't working right, please do not hesitate to let me know so the file can be corrected.

Special thanks

I'd like to thank Deverezieaux at the Vintage Arcade Preservation Society (VAPS) and at Pinside and cerebral3d (ArtStation & Twitch) for sharing their own 3D modeled cam with me to reference and providing pictures of their setup and guidance. Without their help it would have taken much longer to produce useable cams.

I'd also like to thank the Internet Pinball Database for providing high quality photos and scans of some camwheels and their technical drawings.

Models

Four camwheels for Chicago Coin machines are currently available:

190-517-X

190-518-X

190-548-X

190-620-X

These four camwheels should be compatible with many later Chicago Coin games such as Sound Stage, Top Ten, Hee Haw, etc. If you're unsure about your machine's compatibility, consult the machine's parts catalogue or score motor diagram on IPDB. Machines which use these camwheels typically include their model numbers.

Earlier machines such as Gun Smoke and Moon Shot appear to use a different size camwheel which I have not yet modeled. If you happen to have measurements of these earlier camwheels, do please get in touch!

For each model, I've provided two STLs. One includes all features of the camwheel while the second removes some features from the bottom of the wheel for easier printing. You will still need support material in either case.

Printing

I recommend printing with several outer perimeters (say four or so) to ensure there is plenty of material where the switches contact the camwheel and to help prevent shearing across the support posts.

While I do recommend printing the cams in a cheap material first to verify compatibility, I recommend against using PLA for your final cams. If your machine is kept indoors, you may never experience any issues but PLA can become soft and warp in warm environments such as garages, sheds, or while being transported in a hot car.

Not finding the cam you need?

These models were designed with OpenSCAD and are fully parametric. I know OpenSCAD isn't everyone's favorite CAD software so I've done my best to create a custom cam template file to simplify the process and require minimal, if any, prior CAD knowledge. See the customization section of the GitHub README for more information.

Compatibility issues? Have measurements for a new cam model?

Feel free to create an issue on the GitHub repo letting me know your experience with these camwheels. You can report issues, submit measurements for new cam models, or report compatibility with your machines.
