Pin Vise

A pin vise for holding small drills or other tools with a 1/8 inch shaft, for drilling, reaming or filing small holes by hand.

The jaws are integrated with the handle. The jaws have a central hole with parallel sides, like a collet, designed to hold tools with a 1/8 inch shaft. The advantage over a fully adjustable chuck is that the tool is gripped along the full length of the shaft, providing better grip and resistance to slipping. The chuck may be tightened hard without danger of breaking or bending the jaws.

The cap is optional. It may be fitted over the end of the handle (it clicks into place) where it freely spins, making it easier to turn the tool while holding it.

A small drop of light machine oil (like "3-in-1") inside the chuck makes the threads run more freely, and a small drop inside the cap makes it spin more freely. Be careful not to get oil on the inner faces of the jaws.

Notes:

I have printed these in PLA at 0.2mm layer height. Use 50% infill for the handle to give good strength to the jaws. The chuck can be 25% infill. The infill setting for the cap doesn't really matter since there hardly is any.

Originally published on Thingiverse in September 2016 as https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1789374

Category: Hand Tools
