Pimax 5k/8k interface for narrow faces
thingiverse
This interface provides a better fit between the face cushion and the Pimax 5k+ or 8k, reducing visual distortions for those with narrow faces. Results depend heavily on individual face shapes. Distortions were severe for me on the stock Pimax 5k+, but moving the bottom of the HMD out a few mm greatly reduced them. This adapter is thicker at the bottom to achieve that and has sides brought in to increase contact area, spreading pressure points to be more comfortable. If you find too much pressure on your cheeks, shorten the top strap slightly to transfer more weight to the forehead. **Installation (requires adhesive velcro strips):** FacePlate version 1: Print only the top and bottom halves as oriented and glue them together. Alternatively, print a one-piece interface, but this takes longer and requires more support material clean-up. Attach fuzzy velcro to the interface facing the Pimax and put rough velcro on the other side for the face pad to adhere to. Tip: 3-4 small strips are enough to secure it to the Pimax – too much velcro can make positioning difficult without getting stuck in the wrong place. FacePlate version 2: A thinner interface that gets your eyes closer to the lenses than version 1. Which version to get depends on how deeply set your eyes are. Instead of a top and bottom, there is a separate left and right side. FacePlate version 3 (untested): A 5mm spacer with even thickness top and bottom without thickening the sides much, also leaving it thin in the nose area. For people that just need more eye relief. Should fit wide faces as well. Has cut-outs for glasses. FacePlate version 4 - extra thick for glasses (untested): By request – like version 1, but adds 10 mm overall to make room for glasses. Might not play well with the Pimax lens distortion profile. **Notes:** It fits well with the Pimax face cushion, but the one from the Vive pro feels much cozier and there are third-party alternatives available like vrcover. The nose opening is reduced a bit, so that may be an issue for larger noses if you use the original Pimax face cushion. Changing the face cushion can also help tune out fishbowl distortions. You may want to get a thinner or thicker face cushion to get your eyes closer or further from the lenses. This interface adds a couple of mm (plus whatever velcro you use). The Pimax is very fussy about how your eyes are positioned relative to the lenses and they need to be the right distance away as well as perfectly centred. I highly recommend also doing the Vive Deluxe Audio Strap (DAS) mod as it makes it easier to consistently get the Pimax properly aligned and fitted, and is more comfortable all around.
