The enigmatic Master of the Marble Madonnas was a master sculptor, possibly a team of skilled artisans, active in Italy's Tuscan region between 1470 and 1500. His work is characterized by a distinctive style, linked by its uniform composition and drapery patterns. The Master's workshop produced numerous reliefs of the Virgin and Child, as well as busts depicting Christ's suffering, and children's portraits were also popular. Several telltale mannerisms are evident throughout his oeuvre; notably, a peculiar feline smile can be seen emanating from heavy-lidded eyes and taut jaw lines, conveying an inner joy that often veers towards acerbity or even manic intensity.
