Pierced Hemisphere

Pierced Hemisphere

myminifactory

This work is one of the few carved by Hepworth employing a technique called 'Direct Carving', first introduced by the French artist Constantin Brancusi. The method, uses no models or sculptural maquettes prior to his production, but rather the final form of the sculpture emerges through the act of carving the material. This technique emphasises the inherent properties of the materials.  ‘The closed form, such as the oval, spherical or pierced form (sometimes incorporating colour) … translates for me the association and meaning of gesture in landscape’ (Hepworth 1971).       This object is part of "Scan The World". Scan the World is a non-profit initiative introduced by MyMiniFactory, through which we are creating a digital archive of fully 3D printable sculptures, artworks and landmarks from across the globe for the public to access for free. Scan the World is an open source, community effort, if you have interesting items around you and would like to contribute, email stw@myminifactory.com to find out how you can help.
