A pier is a hydraulic structure that protrudes into the water area of a reservoir (river, lake, sea, ocean) and has a very diverse purpose. The pier is raised above the water and, as a rule, is supported by supports (piles). The open structure allows water flows to flow relatively unhindered, while the stronger foundations of the embankment or the closely located piles of the pier can act as a breakwater and, therefore, are more prone to silting.
