Pieke out de Stokstraot (1996) is a sculpture designed by Nicolas van Ronkensteins in one of Maastricht's central streets. This city is now thriving with a busy shopping district at its core, but once it served as the industrial heartland of the Netherlands. This statue is also inspired by Bèr Hollewijn’s fictional character from his 1976 novel “Pieke from the Stokstraatkwartie”. In this book, Hollewijn vividly describes Maastricht's social and political climate in the 1930s when it was heavily industrialized. Pieke, the main character, is now a well-known figure among Maastricht citizens as a typical boy from Stokstraat before the area underwent major renovations. The statue embodies the old social identity of Stokstraat, a time when working-class people lived there and faced poverty. The area was completely transformed between 1960 and 1970. This artwork was created by ARTOM Asia, CATTEL Lorenzo and MASSI Eeva.
