Archaeologists suspect that the subject may be a deity associated with either the Menderes or Dümrek rivers, which flowed through Troy. The fragment in question was unearthed at an archaeological site within the ancient city's walls, situated in southern Turkey. By the 1st century, Troy had evolved into Ilium and become the seat of a bishopric within the Roman province of Hellespontus. As was common throughout the Roman Empire, Roman culture began to blend with the local customs. This period of Roman dominance brought prosperity to the city until the establishment of Constantinople.
