A "piece of eight" is an historical term referring to a Spanish silver coin that was commonly used throughout the Caribbean and the Americas during the colonial era. These coins, which were worth eight "reales," were often cut into eighths in order to facilitate transactions and make change easier. As a result, the phrase "a piece of eight" came to be synonymous with the concept of a currency unit divided into smaller denominations for easy use.
