A Scene from "Pickles" Comic Strip If You're Unfamiliar with Pickles, Check It Out Online The comic strip by Brian Crane is a favorite of my wife and me, and I highly recommend checking it out on the web. The characters are so well-developed that they feel like real people. Meet Earl and Opal, the main characters in the strip. Earl is the husband, and Opal is his wife. They're both lovable and quirky in their own ways. The Picture That Inspired My Model I used a picture from the 25th anniversary of the strip as my model guide. It's a great scene that captures the humor and charm of the comic. My 3D Printed Pickles Model After assembling the model, it stands at an impressive 128mm x 189mm x 203mm high. None of the parts require supports, making it a breeze to print and assemble. Printing Settings Printer: FlashForge Creator X Resolution: .2mm Infill: 10% Tips for Printing Small Parts A few of the smaller pieces may need a brim or raft to ensure they stick to the build plate. You can also try printing them at 50% infill and two shells for a stronger print. How I Designed This Model I used one picture as my model guide, but it wasn't just any picture – it was a special scene from the 25th anniversary of the strip. With a lot of input from my wife, I translated that picture into a 3D design using Blender. Designing with No Angles Greater Than 60 Degrees I have a rule for myself to create models with no angles greater than 60 degrees, which ensures that supports won't be required. This also helps me stay true to the original picture while considering the limitations of 3D printing. Matching Colors Was a Challenge Even with my extensive collection of ABS colors, I struggled to match the original colors of the strip. I ended up buying two new colors, but still took some liberties with the overall color scheme. Colors and Multiple Printed Pieces Here's a breakdown of the colors used for each piece: * Skin/Beige: earl_arm_right, earl_arm_left, opal_arm_right, opal_arm_left, opal_leg_right, opal_leg_left, opal_head, earl_head * White: earl_hair_tope, pearl_hair_bottom, opal_hair, opal_shoe_left, opal_shoe_right, newspaper, earl_eyebrow_right, earl_eyebrow_left, earl_moustashe_tope, pearl_moustashe_bottome, earl_eyewhite_left, earl_eyewhite_right, opal_eyewhite_right, opal_eyewhite_left * Black: eyeblack (four copies), earl_glasses, opal_glasses * Brown: chair_leg (four copies), earl_shoe_right, earl_shoe_left * Grey: earl_leg_right, earl_leg_left * Natural (off-white): earl_shirt_bottom, earl_shirt_top * Purple: opal_shirt_top, opal_shirt_bottom * Light Blue: opal_skirt * Dark Blue: earl_pants_tope, pearl_pants_bottom * Orange: chair, chair_cushion * Light Brown/Gold: rug Printing and Assembly Tips Printing Tips: * Be careful when printing left and right pieces – they can look similar but are not the same. * When printing eyeblacks, leave the extra brim on for a clean fit into the eyewhites. * For small pieces, print them at 50% infill and two shells for a strong print. Assembly Tips: * The diagram in the pictures section will help you assemble the model. * Glue the hands/arms/legs together with the connecting pieces to ensure you have room to position them. * Both eyeglasses are placed on the faces with the bridge down, just over the nose. This might not be obvious from the diagram.
