Phyllite

Phyllite

Phyllite is a low-grade metamorphic rock formed from pelitic material. It stands out from slate due to its higher proportion of newly crystallized minerals, which gives it a more pronounced sheen. In contrast to schist, phyllite's metamorphic minerals are too small to be visible without magnification. The layering seen in this specimen is not the result of sedimentation but rather tectonic forces. Phyllosilicates like muscovite and chlorite continue to grow within the rock, producing a planar structure.
