Revolutionary War Artillery Mortars stood out from cannons in both appearance and firing mechanics. A mortar rested on a flat platform, looking like a massive wooden slab. An adjustable wedge lifted the barrel, allowing the mortar to launch an exploding shell, known as a "bomb," into a steep trajectory. When fired correctly, the bomb soared over trenches and detonated while still airborne, unleashing a hail of shrapnel upon the enemy.
