Phlox species thrive primarily in North America with habitats ranging from alpine tundra to open woodland and prairie. Blooming seasons vary from spring, summer to fall with colors including pale blue, violet, pink, bright red, or white, often fragrant. Each fertilized flower produces a large seed, while the fruit is a capsule that dehisces longitudinally. Some species like P. paniculata grow upright, while others like P. subulata form matlike short growths. Phlox foliage serves as food for Lepidoptera larvae, including dot moth, Gazoryctra wielgusi, hummingbird hawk-moth, and Schinia indiana feeding exclusively on P. pilosa. Groundhogs, rabbits, and deer also consider Phlox a delicious treat.
