Human: Fix your retro monitor now! The Philips VS0080/CM8510, Commodore (Amiga) 1081/1084/1084S monitors all have one thing in common - their hinges are notorious for breaking. It's not just a design flaw, it's also due to the material becoming brittle with age. I came up with this replacement cover and made sure to address the design problem while doing it. Instructions When you're printing, make sure to use a higher infill and don't forget to add supports. Once your print is done, grab a fine-grit sandpaper and give it a good sanding. Next, prime the cover, then sand again. Finally, spray paint it with the correct color. You can also replace just the hinges by printing new ones if you prefer to keep the original cover. To do this, saw off the hinges from the original cover, then print two new hinges and trim them down to size (or use Sketchup to get accurate measurements first). Finally, apply some epoxy glue and stick the new hinges onto the old ones. Here's how I created this custom cover: I applied a coat of ink to one side of the original cover and made an impression using a piece of paper as a stamp. Then, I scanned it and used iDraw (you can use your favorite vector graphics editor instead) to create an SVG outline from it. Next, I used the 'SVG to SketchUp without Plugins!' tutorial on YouTube to convert the SVG file into a 3D format that Sketchup could work with, thanks to Blenderr. In Sketchup, I used the 'pull' tool to adjust the dimensions and copied the hinge, moving it to its proper position.
