Phanteks Shift Intake Fan Filter

Phanteks Shift Intake Fan Filter

When I bought my Phanteks Shift case, I noticed many problems caused by poor airflow within an otherwise great looking case. I figured out the airflow issues and made several modifications, including this print. The standard filter was too restrictive for intake, and exhaust air was filtered even though it didn't need to be. After researching extensively, I chose the Silverstone FF143B 140MM Ultra Fine Filter because I live in a dusty environment and have pets at home. I then taped the filter to the intake area to test thermals. Once satisfied with the filter's performance, I designed a custom bracket that would hold the filter in place while having a stock appearance, preventing cold air from escaping through unused wiring access holes. This bracket is specifically designed for a 140mm fan and the Phanteks Shift base model, not the Shift X. To make it fit, I had to grind away part of the front cover support bracket to create clearance between it and the filter (as shown), but this is the only mandatory case modification required. I also recommend modifying the case by cutting out unnecessary metal across fan faces as all it seems to do is generate noise from turbulence of fan blades and restrict airflow. I didn't conduct a before/after temperature test between stock configuration and this print, but when combined with other brackets, ducts, and case modifications, this intake/exhaust fan setup was able to support enough cooling air to keep a back-plated GTX 1080 at 61 degrees after 30 minutes running the Heaven benchmark, and an 8700k at 70 degrees (consuming 61 watts), all on air. This doesn't mean you will achieve these results, just that this bracket and filter combination should be able to support the airflow needed to do so when combined with other modifications. The bottom line is that if you want to remove stock restrictive filter strips but are still worried about dust and pet hair getting into your computer, this modification should do just that.
