PFM-1 is a Soviet-made landmine with striking similarities to the BLU-43 US Army landmine. Both devices share a common shape and principles, although they employ different explosives. The mine itself is essentially a plastic container filled with explosive liquid. It's stored with a pin that restrains a detonating plunger, which is slowly forced forward by a spring once the arming pin is removed. This process can take anywhere from one to forty minutes, allowing for manual deployment or air-dropped delivery. Deformation of the mine's soft plastic skin triggers the arming plunger to strike the detonator, resulting in detonation. The mine's body serves as a single cumulative pressure primer, making it extremely hazardous to handle, as even a 5 kg press can trigger its operation. The charge is usually non-lethal but sufficient to cause damage to the foot if stepped on. The PFM-1's design derives from close-packing within the dispenser casing, resulting in a shape and bright color that attracts children. Western media has claimed that they were deliberately designed to resemble toys, but this has been denied by the Soviets. The plastic body can be molded in various colors for camouflage purposes. Early examples used in 1980s Afghanistan were green, making them easily visible. The mine can be deployed from helicopters or by infantry. In the latter variant, multiple mines are scattered over a circle with a diameter of approximately 15 meters. Once armed, the fuze on a PFM-1 mine cannot be disarmed. A variant, the PFM-1S, self-destructs after one to forty hours, with 85% of the mines destroyed within 80 hours. The standard render-safe procedure involves detonating a small explosive charge next to it. PFM-1 was mainly used during the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan, resulting in a high number of casualties among children who mistook it for a toy due to its shape and coloring. As it exploded, it often caused hand and head trauma, frequently lethal. This characteristic made PFM-1 a principal target for the International Campaign to Ban Landmines.
