A chess pawn is a minor piece in the game of chess, placed on the second rank for each player at the start of the game. It can move forward one or two squares on its first move, but only one square forward thereafter, capturing an opponent's piece when it moves onto an occupied square. The pawn has a unique ability to promote to a more powerful piece upon reaching the opposite end of the board.
