Use it with a half-inch socket wrench and minimize extension. Remember to only hand tighten the filter; it will tighten itself. So, hand tighten, then give it a maximum 1/4 turn. If the oil filter breaks due to over-tightening, it's clear that the gasket was tightened too much - these filters don't need to be very tight for a secure seal.
