The Petrified Wood Display at Johnston Geology Museum on Emporia State University's campus showcases a remarkable exhibit that is part of the Melvin Lightcap rock collection. According to the label, Mr. Lightcap, a seasoned science teacher in Leavenworth for many years and an ardent rock collector, donated his extensive collection in 1986 to ESU. The collection, weighing a staggering 25 tons, comprises mostly rocks from the western United States.
