Al-Khazneh (Arabic: "The Treasury"), is one of the most intricate temples constructed in the ancient Arab Nabatean Kingdom city of Petra. Like many other buildings in this historic town, including the Monastery (Ad Deir), this structure was carefully carved out of a massive sandstone rock face. It was initially built as a grand mausoleum and crypt during the early 1st century AD under the reign of Aretas IV Philopatris. The treasury was masterfully crafted by the Arab Nabateans, who were coincidentally living through the time of the Hellenistic and Roman Empires, resulting in classical Greek-influenced architecture. Today, this magnificent temple is a highly sought-after tourist destination in both Jordan and the surrounding region.
