In January 1698, Russia's Peter the Great arrived in Deptford to learn shipbuilding techniques, spending several months at Sayes Court, a house he leased from diarist John Evelyn. Unveiled in June 2001 as a belated tribute to mark 300 years since his visit, a statue now stands before Greenfell Mansions on Glaisher Street near the Thames, marking Deptford Creek's entrance.
