Peter Paul Rubens in Antwerp, Belgium

Guillaume Geefs (10 September 1805 – 19 January 1883), also known as Willem Geefs, was a renowned Belgian sculptor. His monumental works and public portraits of statesmen and nationalist figures earned him widespread recognition. However, he also ventured into mythological subject matter, often with an erotic theme that added depth to his art. This large bronze monument was created in tribute to Peter Paul Rubens (28 June 1577 – 30 May 1640), a Flemish Baroque painter celebrated for his grandiose style that emphasized movement, color, and sensuality. As a proponent of the Counter-Reformation, Rubens is famous for his altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. In addition to running a thriving studio in Antwerp that produced paintings favored by nobility and art collectors across Europe, Rubens was a classically educated humanist scholar and diplomat who received knighthood from Philip IV of Spain and Charles I of England. A self-portrait of Rubens, painted in 1639, showcases his distinctive hat.
