In 1986, artist Kevin Atherton unveiled three life-size bronze sculptures at Brixton station, each capturing a fleeting moment of human connection. Inspired by the concept of "love at first sight," Atherton created these pieces to explore the brief moments Londoners share with one another in crowded cities. By placing the sculptures within looking distance of each other on the platform, Atherton invited passersby to engage with his artwork. After observing how commuters interacted with their surroundings, he selected three models: Peter Lloyd, Joy Battick, and Katin Heistermann, each representing a unique individual yet blending together through the bronze finish. This innovative approach erased superficial differences between the trio, regardless of background or identity. As Londoners from all walks of life waited for trains, Atherton's sculptures became a common denominator, bridging gaps between people. The casting process involved creating plaster casts of his subjects' bodies, dressing them in real clothes stiffened with resin, and applying thin layers of bronze to achieve an authentic look. This project is part of the "Scan The World" initiative, a non-profit collaboration that aims to create a digital archive of 3D printable sculptures and artworks from around the globe for public access.
