This is a bronze replica of the Peter I statue for the Petrozavodsk monument erected in 1873. Born on June 9, 1672, in Moscow, Russia, Peter I, also known as Peter the Great, ruled Russia as czar in the late 17th century. He implemented sweeping reforms to make Russia a major world power. He developed a strong navy and reorganized his army according to Western military standards. He secularized schools and increased government control over the conservative Orthodox Church. He introduced new administrative and territorial divisions for the country. In 1721, Peter I became emperor, marking the end of Russian Tsardom and the beginning of the Russian Empire. The monument's foundation was laid on May 30, 1872, commemorating the 200th anniversary of Peter the Great's birth.
