Perun was the god of thunder, lightning, storms, and weather. He is often depicted as a powerful, muscular man with an axe or hammer. In many cultures, Perun was associated with the god of the sky and the ruler of the gods. In Slavic mythology, Perun was worshipped during village holidays in late spring and summer. Shrines dedicated to him were usually located on top of mountains or hills or in sacred groves underneath ancient oaks. These shrines served as general places of worship and sacrifices, including offerings of bulls, oxen, rams, and eggs. Perun had several associations, including a tree association (oak), a day association (Thursday), and a material association (tin). After the arrival of Christianity, Perun was largely replaced by Saint Elijah the Thunderer.
