The real perch (Perca fluviatilis), commonly known in Italy as the fish perch, is a freshwater fish belonging to the Percid family of the order Perciformes. It prefers very weak currents, having sedentary habits, so its presence is more widespread in lacustrine environments rather than fluvial. The perch has an arched back and a fairly stout oval-shaped body. It has two separate dorsal fins with a short space between them, the first of which is equipped with spines. The caudal fin is slightly forked. Head and mouth are of decent size. Behind the head, the body forms a clear step. It has a greenish-gray back with 5 to 8 vertical dark stripes often bifurcated in Y shape on the posterior part of the body. The ventral, anal, and caudal fins are red or orange, often very vivid, while the pectoral fins are yellowish and the belly is white. Often there is a dark spot at the end of the first dorsal fin.
