Persian columns or Persepolitan columns are a distinctive form of column that originated in ancient Persia around 500 BCE. The massive main columns at Persepolis have a base, fluted shaft, and a double-animal capital featuring bulls on most. Achaemenid palaces are known for their enormous hypostyle halls called apadana, which were supported by rows of columns inside the palace. The Throne Hall or Hall of a Hundred Columns at Persepolis was built by King Artaxerxes I and measures 70 x 70 meters in size. It includes a throne for the king and hosts grand ceremonial assemblies that can accommodate up to ten thousand people at a time. The Apadana hall is even larger. The Achaemenids were novices in stone architecture but managed to import artists and craftsmen from around their empire to create a hybrid imperial style that draws inspiration from Greece, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Lydia in Anatolia, Elam in Persia, and other cultures. The development of the imperial style probably took place at the Palace of Darius in Susa.
