Perseus With The Head of Medusa at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
myminifactory
This colossal marble sculpture was crafted by Antonio Canova between 1804-6 in Rome, Italy. The mythological hero Perseus proudly displays Medusa's severed head to the world, drawing attention to his idealized physique. A drape falls from his left arm, framing his well-proportioned body. Designed to rival ancient statues, this figure boasts full musculature and balanced shoulders, hips, and limbs. The Gorgon Medusa was feared for her ability to petrify men, but Canova has turned cold marble into warm flesh with his mastery of the medium. Perseus's pose mirrors that of the Belvedere Apollo. This sculpture is part of the "Scan The World" initiative, a non-profit effort by MyMiniFactory to create a digital archive of 3D printable sculptures and artworks from around the globe.
