Perseus and Andromeda at The Louvre, Paris

This awe-inspiring larger-than-life marble group sculpture brings an epic scene from Ovid's Metamorphosis to life. Tied to a rock, Andromeda awaits her fate at the jaws of a sea monster that has been terrorizing the area for years, sent by Neptune as punishment for Juno's outrage over the princess's breathtaking beauty. Meanwhile, Perseus, Jupiter and Danae's son, stands victorious, having defeated the dragon with Medusa's severed head, which had the power to turn its enemies into stone. After marrying Andromeda, Perseus sets her free. The sculpture was crafted between 1684 and 1689 as a royal commission for King Louis XIV, likely in collaboration with Christophe Veyrier, a renowned sculptor of the time. Originally installed in the Palace of Versailles' gardens in 1685, it was later relocated to The Louvre in Paris, where it remains on permanent display today.
