Permanent Magnet Motor/Generator Rotor
thingiverse
This is a permanent magnet motor or generator rotor designed for high-performance applications. It utilizes a double stack of popular-sized ceramic magnets, specifically the 1-7/8" X 7/8" X 3/8" model available at online retailers like Harbor Freight (https://www.harborfreight.com/pack-of-2-ceramic-block-magnets-97504.html). The rotor comes in two variations: one with an 8mm shaft and the other with a 1/2" shaft. Secure the ends using #6 to 32 x 1/2" bolts. The rotor's dimensions are 3.5" in diameter and 1.885" in length, making it suitable for various motor and generator applications. To enhance stability, .25" bearing stand-offs have been added to both ends. Additionally, the design accounts for material shrinkage by increasing the space between magnets and bolt holes by .01". For optimal performance, use a high-quality polyester glue to secure the magnets in place. Gorilla Glue is a reliable choice due to its ability to withstand shock and vibration. When using Gorilla Glue, make sure to apply water as instructed, as it will not set properly without it. Warning: Always experiment at your own risk, as catastrophic failure of spinning parts can result in property damage, injury, or even death. To ensure safety, consider adding a magnet cover for additional support, especially when operating at higher rpm's. A fiberglass or carbon fiber layer would be an ideal option, accompanied by 100% infill on the rotor for high-speed experiments. Don't forget to properly glue your magnets in place using Gorilla Glue. On February 24, 2018, a magnet cover was added to enhance safety when spinning at higher rpm's. It is recommended to use a fiberglass or carbon fiber layer instead, which would provide additional support and stability. Additionally, make sure to secure the magnets with 100% infill on the rotor for high-speed experiments. Remember to glue your magnets in place using Gorilla Glue, as it handles shock and vibration well when applied correctly.
