Perma-Proto Lamp for Ender

Depending how much light you want, and what color they light up, usually between 6 and 12 super bright (at least a few thousand mcd) LEDs should work. (You can always add more later.) Resistors, one per LED*. Use Ohm's Law for 5V minus the LED's voltage, or if unsure then 200 or 220 ohm usually works great (but see below if using infrared). Perma-Proto board (Adafruit and Digi-Key carry these). USB DIY connector, or other connector for 5V power supply. If you are using a Raspberry Pi controller, it will offer you ample power through its USB ports. Wire Solder Translucent filament Cyanoacrylate (super) glue *If you are making an infrared illuminator, for example to use with a Pi NoIR camera or similar, then you'll want two IR LEDs in series with each 200-220 ohm resistor, because the IR diodes run at a lower voltage. My IR make of this design uses 12 IR LEDs and it is quite bright. Instructions: Print the 8mm cover in translucent filament and the other parts in a color of your choice. Print several Tiny Links depending on how much swivel you want in the light (each one only offers a small range of motion). Place the LEDs about evenly spaced through the holes on the board and solder them in place. Remember which lead is the longer lead, as this is universally the positive (+) lead. If using infrared, place the LEDs in pairs side by side and connect the positive lead of one to the negative lead of the other. Solder one wire and one resistor connecting each LED (or each pair if infrared) to the rails on its side of the board, observing the polarity (red for positive, black or blue for negative). Solder two long wires, one red and one black, to the USB connector. Looking at the DIY connector creased side up, plug facing away from you, the positive lead will be the rightmost one and the negative lead the leftmost (the two center leads are not used for this project). Careful not to short the positive to the outer metal, and not to short the middle two leads to anything. If using a different connector, you'll want to refer to its pinout. Solder the other end of the long wires to the board's rails, observing polarity. Once the prints are done, super glue the socket to the back of the mount. Once the glue has set, the Perma-Proto will snap right in, and the diffuser cover will snap onto it. Make sure the USB wires are unobstructed before snapping together. The Ender clip is a 20mm clip that will fit onto the metal rail at the front of your printer, or on the sides on the short dimension. Its ball protrusion will fit the Tiny Links that will plug into the lamp, and the lamp can be powered from any 5V source that fits the plug.
