Central Turkey's breathtaking Cappadocia is home to an otherworldly landscape dotted with dreamy 'fairy chimneys' - unique rock formations that rival its remarkable history in grandeur. The area's most extraordinary phase was during the medieval era, when Byzantine Christians took refuge in the valleys' secluded hideaways. Monastic settlements established troglodyte dwellings, cave churches, and chapels that added a solemn air to this prehistoric region. The Goreme Open-Air Museum, a World Heritage site, boasts an impressive collection of ancient chapels and living quarters, most dating back to around the 11th century.
