The origin of the word is rooted in Late Latin, where "pergula" refers to a projecting eave. Pergolas are different from green tunnels, which are roadways covered by a canopy of trees. People often confuse them with arbors, which typically feature wooden bench seats and roof enclosures formed by lattice panels for climbing plants. A pergola, however, is a larger open structure without integral seating. While an arbor usually has lattice panels that provide shade, it does not compare to the openness and grandeur of a well-designed pergola. Pergolas often link pavilions or extend from buildings' doors into isolated garden features like terraces or pools. Some freestanding pergolas are situated independently without being attached to homes or other structures, offering space for people to sit comfortably under shade and enjoy gentle breezes while staying protected from harsh sunlight.
