In ancient times, skilled artisans crafted numerous terracotta figurines in the shape of bottles - containers for fragrant oils. Created in Rhodes, Samos or Miletus, these items were widely exported across the Mediterranean, reaching Italy to the west and the shores of the Black Sea to the north. The most impressive terracotta sculptures from the Hellenistic world were produced at Myrina, a small city with little political influence situated between Smyrna and Pergamon. Some reflect current trends in large-scale sculpture, while a few display the names of their creators on the back. Terracottas from Hellenistic Cyprus showcase the blend of local and cosmopolitan influences typical of the island during this period. This object is part of "Scan The World".
