Cell was a cutting-edge creation of Dr. Gero, who hailed from a future timeline, engineered to possess all the capabilities of Earth's greatest fighters; the result was an elite warrior with numerous advantageous genetic traits and special abilities. Cell is a bio-artificial life form created by Doctor Gero's supercomputer using cells from the universe's strongest warriors, possessing the genetic information of Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, and Frieza in a secret underground complex beneath Gero's laboratory. Cell was designed to evolve into the ultimate being by absorbing Androids #17 and #18. The Cell that emerges as the primary antagonist of his arc is from the future, awakening after his development is complete only to find that the Androids have been destroyed by Trunks. After killing Trunks, Cell uses his time machine while regressing into an egg form to travel back four years to before the androids appeared in the present timeline. After hatching and metamorphosing from a larval, cicada-like form into an insect-like Imperfect form, Cell kills thousands of people and absorbs them to boost his power in preparation for absorbing the Androids. After absorbing the energy of entire cities of people, Cell finds Android #17 during his fight with Piccolo, breaks Piccolo's neck before Android 16 holds off the mechanized villain. However, he manages to make an opening to absorb #17 and evolves into Semi-Perfect Cell, quickly dispatching 16, but is unable to absorb #18 thanks to Tenshinhan's intervention, who sacrifices his life force to hold him back.
