Penrose Chickens were conceived by mathematician Roger Penrose, showcasing unique aperiodic tiling properties, which means they tile but never repeat their pattern. Explore https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penrose_tiling for further information. My custom implementation of Penrose Chickens diverges from existing Internet examples due to various defects; consequently, I designed my own adaptation based on the kite and dart layout inherent in the Penrose P2 tiling system. Printing Settings Printer Manufacturer: Printrbot Printer Model: Simple Black Raft Option: No Support Feature: No Infill Level: A 10% setting works perfectly. Post-Production Considerations Inaccurate printers might necessitate sanding or scraping to ensure accurate placement, especially around beak areas where fit issues frequently arise. Design Overview The design utilizes the kite and dart tiling framework. Find this public project on OnShape.com by searching for "Penrose Chickens." Feel free to duplicate and remix it freely. Notably, only two line patterns are required (one longer than the other) and are translated/rotated to create kite and dart shapes. By modifying these line patterns, additional items possessing the P2 tessellation property can be produced. Future iterations could potentially adjust the design so that the shorter lines (the base of the kite bird and the top of the dart bird) interlock, forming a complete tiling system like how the beaks fit together perfectly in their designated cutouts. For precision printing purposes, I applied a 0.25mm offset to each object's zero-tolerance outline, accounting for potential errors. Accurate printers might reduce this value to achieve tighter tolerances; however, adjusting this setting excessively may affect the appearance of surface decoration lines on top. To avoid print-layer conflicts at edges, the bottom and top surfaces are also beveled or smoothed out, so that excess materials around edges won't disrupt assembly accuracy.
