Penguins (Spheniscidae) are a unique family of birds, comprising the sole members in the Sphenisciformes order. These non-flying seabirds predominantly inhabit the southern hemisphere, with the notable exception being the Galapagos penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus). The term Sphenisciformes originates from "spheniscus," a Greek word literally meaning "wedge," alluding to their streamlined shape while swimming.
