This bronze sculpture by Antoine Bourdelle (Montauban, 1861 - Le Vésinet, 1929) is a replica of the original model created in 1909. Between 1905 and 1912, Bourdelle worked on a figure of Penelope, Ulysses' wife, as he waited patiently for her return. Antiquity greatly inspired Boudelle, leading him to revamp his style and create new works that would influence artists of the 20th century. This Penelope follows classic Greek antique sculpture's style in a 'Hanchée' position, similar to contraposto, and stands like a caryatid - a sculptural form serving as a pillar but shaped like a woman. Her attitude is reminiscent of Tanagra figurines, which were mold-cast terracotta sculptures produced from the later fourth century BCE primarily in Boeotian Tanagra. She has a simple form that's visually appealing, with a posture similar to Indian sculpture, which Bourdelle admired greatly. Her curves evoke old Gothic Parisian sculptures from the 14th Century. These references are combined in a modern and geometric style - slightly cubic, yet reminiscent of old works in contemporary times.
