The castle of Penella perches atop a limestone outcropping with sheer walls on its northern flank, commanding a strategic view of Alcoy and Cocentaina below. By the late thirteenth century, Jaime I the Conqueror held sway over this region. The border tensions with the kingdom of Al-Andalus necessitated the reinforcement of existing Muslim strongholds and the construction of new ones. In 1271, Jaime I granted Guillem Pons de Villafranca permission to build a fortress on the Peniella rock. The castle's defensive design was geared toward securing territorial dominance. Its location allowed it to monitor any potential armed incursion or uprising sparked by the Saracen communities resisting in the Vall de Seta, Travadell, Gallinera, and Guadalest regions to the east. Coordinates: 38.701570, -0.417890 Photogrammetry derived from a YouTube video.
