The first appearance of cherubim in the Bible happens almost as soon as creation gets underway. It's written that after humans got kicked out of Paradise, God put a fiery sword-wielding cherub on the gates of the Garden of Eden to keep them out for good. Both King David and the prophet Ezekiel referenced these heavenly guardians - they highlight how cherubim served as God's primary transportation mode. But their purpose as angelic beings remains murky in some Christian sources, claiming that other angels, specifically thrones, take on this role instead. Despite centuries of studying them, linguists can't crack the code of the word "cherub" - its true meaning remains elusive, and some link it to the Hebrew phrase rahav, which translates as horseback riding in English.
