Pendants, often suspended from a bracelet, earring, or necklace, have their roots in ancient practices of wearing amulets or talismans around the neck. Worn since the Stone Age, pendants originally consisted of objects like teeth, stones, and shells. During the Middle Ages, notable jewels included devotional pendants, often bearing religious subjects, and crosses, intricately chased or enamelled with scenes from faith. One famous early pendant reliquary belonged to Charlemagne, containing relics of the True Cross and the crown of thorns beneath a sapphire set in gold. In the 14th century, noblemen commonly wore necklaces featuring pendants that bore heraldic subjects; women's pendants typically depicted sentimental themes. By the start of the 16th century, pendants shifted from being predominantly religious to decorative objects. Artists of the Renaissance created numerous exquisite crosses and figured pendants, crafted in high relief, which showcased a wide array of subjects, including mermaids, tritons, animals, ships, and mythological scenes. Baroque pearls were often employed to create irregular shapes that served as bodies for human figures or animals, whose faces and limbs were intricately modelled in gold and enamelled.
