The term "pendant" originates from the Arabic word "pendere" and Old French "pendr", both of which literally translate to "hanging down". Typically, a pendant takes the form of a loose-hanging piece of jewelry that is secured by a small loop attached to a necklace, commonly referred to as a pendant necklace. A pendant earring, on the other hand, features an earring with a hanging element. In contemporary French, "pendant" serves as the gerund form of the verb "prendre", meaning "to hang", and is also used to signify "during". The extent to which a pendant's design integrates into the overall necklace makes it challenging to distinguish them as distinct items.
