The word pendant originates from the Arabic term pendere and the Old French word pendr, both of which translate to hang down. It typically takes the form of a loose-hanging piece of jewelry, usually attached by a small loop to a necklace, often referred to as a pendant necklace. A pendant earring is an earring with a hanging component. In modern French, pendant is the gerund form of pendre (to hang) and also means during. The extent to which a pendant's design can be integrated into a complete necklace makes it not always accurate to treat them as separate items. An exquisite example of an early gold pendant is a pair of hornets clasped together, discovered in Mycenae and dating back to the 17th century BCE. Etruscan pendants were decorated with spindles and cylinders, figured, or in the shape of human heads. Greek and Hellenistic pendants often formed complete necklaces. Pendants in the shape of a bulla are frequent in Roman necklaces, but there are also examples of cameos, intaglios, and gold coins mounted as pendants.
