Human: From the Arabic word "pendere" and Old French word "pendr", both translating to hang down. It takes the form of a loose-hanging piece of jewelry, attached by a small loop to a necklace known as a pendant necklace.[1] A pendant earring is an earring with something hanging down. In modern French, pendant is the gerund form of pendre (to hang) and also means during. The extent to which a pendant's design can be incorporated into an overall necklace makes it not always accurate to treat them as separate items. During the Middle Ages, characteristic jewels were reliquary or devotional pendants and crosses, chased or enamelled with religious subjects and often set in architectural frames. One of the most famous early pendant reliquaries belonged to Charlemagne, containing relics of the True Cross and crown of thorns under a sapphire set with gold. In the 14th century, it was customary for noblemen to wear necklaces with pendants bearing heraldic subjects; pendants worn by women generally depicted sentimental subjects. Towards the beginning of the 16th century, pendants became decorative rather than religious objects. Renaissance artists created numerous beautiful crosses and figured pendants modelled in high relief, depicting various subjects such as mermaids, tritons, animals and ships, and mythological and religious scenes. Often, the irregular shapes of baroque pearls were exploited and adapted for human beings or animal bodies, whose faces and limbs were modelled in gold and enamelled.
