I need to design something to aid students during at-home learning. It should be stylish, minimalistic, and capable of holding writing utensils and/or at least four Good Day Energy Chocolates (these are small, caffeinated chocolates I eat when I’m tired!). I think it would be helpful because most of us feel our tiredest during class, but can’t leave to go get anything to help us stay awake. Having a place to store writing utensils will be useful for organization as well, since all your necessities will be in one place, eliminating the issue of having to search for them during class. 1. What issues did you come up against? The CAD software I had originally intended to use, Inventor, would not run on the computer as I thought it would, so I had to try a completely new softaware. At first I tried OnShape, but after three hours I really felt like I was getting nowhere as it was hard to get the sketches I needed onto the correct plane(s). So I switched to Fusion360, and eventually was able to complete my work there. Creating the pipe for the chocolates to go through turned out to be more of a challenge than I had anticipated, especially since this software was still so foreign to me. I eventually joined two shapes together to create the pipe shape I needed. 2. If you could redesign this again what would you change? I would make the design a little more pleasing to look at, and try out different arrangements of the compartments (possible chocolate first and pencil sharpener last). As for aesthetic modifications, I was thinking perhaps a relaxing blue and grey with some added engraved designs (name initials, cartoon animals, symbols and such) or interesting textures (smooth, bumpy, anything unique). 3. How would 3D printing help strengthen your design? 3D printing my design would help me to test and improve my design, as well as build a sturdy prototype for said testing and improvement. I could test the efficiency of the chocolate pipe, affirm that the dimensions I created for the pencil sharpener were accurate, and get opinions from real people on what they thought could be added, improved or modified.
