I've got a DIY pen tray setup that fits perfectly in an old earbud box I had lying around. It's completely self-contained, no extra parts needed. The base of the tray is one solid piece, while the top is essentially half of the base. You can stack two top trays on a single bottom tray, and since the top trays are identical, you can even nest them on top of each other. The top tray has space for seven pens, whereas the bottom tray can hold fourteen.
