Pegasus is a legendary winged stallion in Greek mythology, and one of the most iconic creatures in ancient Greek lore. Typically depicted as pure white, Pegasus is a child of Poseidon, the powerful Olympian god. He was born from the Gorgon Medusa[1] when she died after being beheaded by the hero Perseus. Pegasus has a brother named Chrysaor and an uncle named Geryon. Ancient poets wrote about Pegasus's ascent to heaven after his birth, and how he obeyed Zeus, the king of the gods, who ordered him to bring lightning and thunder from Olympus. As a friend of the Muses, Pegasus created Hippocrene, a legendary fountain on Mt. Helicon. Pegasus was caught by the Greek hero Bellerophon near the Peirene Fountain with help from Athena and Poseidon. Pegasus allowed Bellerophon to ride him in order to defeat the monstrous Chimera, leading to many other heroic exploits. However, Bellerophon fell off Pegasus's back while trying to reach Mount Olympus. Later, Zeus transformed Pegasus into a constellation. The symbolism of Pegasus has changed over time. In the Middle Ages and Renaissance, he represented wisdom and fame. During the 19th century, Pegasus became associated with poetry as the source of inspiration for many poets. He is featured in rich iconography, especially in ancient Greek pottery and paintings from the Renaissance period. Hypotheses have been proposed about Pegasus's relationships with the Muses, Athena, Poseidon, Zeus, Apollo, and Perseus.
