I remixed the peacock here to try to make it easier to FDM print: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:182242

I looked at how Cura was adding support with a 70% overhang and I saw that tilting the model about 10 degrees backwards would minimize support, especially on the front side of the feathers. I then used Fusion 360 to tilt to that angle and then cut into two pieces and closed the cut meshes. Both the body and leg pieces will require support.

I put a 0.12 layer around the base peacock body also to ensure it has good bed contact and that is the layer height that I intend to print at. I could have used a brim but wanted to be sure it was where I wanted it. I'll include the tilted body without the rectangular base I added as well for more flexibility (i.e. scaling)

I also fixed some watertight manifold issues and posted the complete non-tilted and repaired model here as well.

I have printed the body half at 0.12 layer height and a 70% support overhang and support set to everywhere. I did not print the body with the 0.12mm base (accidentally) but I had good enough base adhesion without the base that the print completed successfully anyway. I added a few pics of what I ended up with on my first try at 100% scale. I could probably benefit from tuning up my printer but my kid liked it as is, with the support left on and no feet!

If you print, please post a make. I'd like to see the quality of prints that people are able to achieve.

Enjoy!
Category: Creatures
