Peacock (Peafowl)
sketchfab
The Indian peafowl or blue peafowl (Pavo cristatus) is a stunning bird species that calls South Asia home, but has also been introduced to many other parts of the world with great success. The male, known as the peacock, boasts an impressive blue plumage and a magnificent fan-like crest made up of long, wire-like feathers with spatula-tipped ends. This extraordinary feature is best seen when the peacock raises its long train of upper-tail covert feathers into a stunning display during courtship. These elongated feathers are not only remarkable in their length but also incredibly stiff, allowing them to be quivered and raised high into the air. Notably, despite their impressive size and length, these magnificent birds are still capable of flying effortlessly through the skies. In contrast, peahens lack this stunning train, instead sporting a duller brown plumage with a greenish lower neck. The Indian peafowl is primarily found on the ground in open forests or cultivated areas where they forage for berries and grains while also preying on snakes, lizards, and small rodents. Their loud calls make them easy to spot, often signaling the presence of a predator like a tiger in forested areas.
